Temperance organization founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1874. Campaigning against the use of alcohol and in favor of labor laws and prison reform, the W.C.T.U. became one of the largest and most influential women's organizations of the 19th century. It became global when the World W.C.T.U. was founded in 1883. Lloyd William Taylor (1893-1948), noted physicist, married WCTU crusader Esther Elenora Bliss (1890-1980) in 1917. He earned his Ph. D. from the University of Chicago in 1922. In 1924 Taylor was appointed chairman of the Oberlin College Physics Department. He authored several books including "Physics: The Pioneer Science" (1941); "College Manual of Optics" (1924); and co-authored "General Physics for the Laboratory" (1926) with Carl Ellis Howe. Esther Bliss Taylor (1890-1980), wife of Oberlin College Physics Professor Lloyd William Taylor (1893-1948), was a tireless temperance crusader. A president of the Oberlin, Ohio branch of the WCTU from 1946 to 1976, Esther Bliss Taylor promoted local temperance initiatives and educational programs.
